cleaning up gmail

Every year or so I like to reboot how I manage my work and personal email (both of which use gmail).  This week I did that, by doing the following:

1. Erasing all my filters.

2. Going in to Settings -> Inbox and configuring my inbox as:

Then I let mail come in.  As it comes in, I take one of the following actions:

1. For normal e-mail that I need to pay attention to, I handle it and archive it.

2. For junk mail, I unsubscribe.

3. For mailing lists, I create a new rule for each message to direct the message to skip the inbox, and apply a "List" label.
