The Hollywood sign has been rescued from urban sprawl. A conservation group was raising $12.5 million to purchase 138 acres adjacent to the hillside icon, but was $1 million short. Then the donation from Playboy founder Hugh Hefner closed the gap. http://n.pr/9svh57

The California Missions are absolutely beautiful. But some of the more out of the way missions have hidden treasures not many people get to see and that the working Missions don't have space to feature. For example Mission La Purisima is mostly set up to show what life would have been like for the people who built it. With live animals, and historic reenactments, they show a side of the missions that a working church does not have the room for. Add to that the fact that each missions' architecture is unique and beautiful, they are well worth the visit!

There are a couple spots in my house where the glass in a frame reflects the lights and makes it impossible to see the lovely photo behind it. Solution: print your photos on canvas and hang it without a frame. The shop in San Francisco where I've gotten a lot of my photos printed can do this (over the internets): http://photoworkssf.com/services-and-rates/gallery-wrap-canvas-prints

It's hard enough to swallow the concept of paying more than a dollar for a bottle of water, I don't think I'd want to continue paying for water when tap water is perfectly potable too. However, I also don't want to carry around a clunky bottle that doesn't fit in my tote or takes too long to open in the middle of spin class. Look for the perfect bottle to fit your lifestyle with so many different designs out there. You can get some ideas from this water bottle blog, My Water Bloggle.

Fifty years without maintenance and the road is already starting to disappear back into the California hills. When I walk along this section near Pacifica, I am reminded that it takes constant vigilance to retain our civilization. Left on its own, even our cities would fade fast." A hidden gem tucked into the Presidio, the museum provides an excellent overview of Disney's life and career. With tons of art, photographs, old cameras and more to look at, it's worth blocking off an afternoon to see it all. While there's plenty for younger kids to enjoy, there's a lot to read, making it potentially more interesting for late-elementary and middle schoolers than their younger siblings.

According to Born to Run by Christopher McDougall, many of our modern-day running injuries are related to the shoes we wear, which work against the way our feet are designed to flex and bend. When actually going barefoot isn't an option, you can do the next best thing by trying some barefoot shoes, like the Vivo Barefoot line from Terra Plana. Their running shoe, the Ultra, is lightweight and comfortable, but they also have street shoes for everyday use.

While the clearest attractions here are the fine dining options, the nightly films lend Foreign Cinema an old-Hollywood ambiance (and a nice distraction if you're on a bad date.) Old Town Park City—the downtown area—is the center of it all. Harry O's is the big nightclub—during the ski-movie premieres you'll see pros there. O'Shucks on Main Street is the dive bar. They serve two-pint schooners of beer, which look like fishbowls. For food, the No Name Saloon has great buffalo burgers. Park City Mountain has the best slopeside bar, the Corner Store, with outdoor seating and great views of the mountain. To learn more about this trip and other ski vacations, visit OutsideOnline.com.

The state of Vermont offers about 6,200 acres of skiing at 20 resorts. Vail, all by its lonesome, serves up 5,289 skiable acres—most of them in the wide-open, seemingly endless Back Bowls. All that ungroomed snow used to beat up even the best skiers, but today's fat skis let you ride screaming sweeper turns as if you were on a buffed-out groomer (1,600 acres of which Vail offers). Meanwhile, the pub-crawl scene through Vail village—recently renovated to the tune of more than $1 billion—should keep you busy at night. Building homes aren't just for contractors and VERY handy people. Most of his works are widely available, and free versions can be found here.

Lovers of local treasure can get their fill of precious metals at the New York Federal Reserve Bank. This walk beats the grade-school field trip to the local Chase branch with its promise of viewing the gold-bar-filled vault (don’t look too closely lest security get suspicious). First, you’ll hit the museum to check out a collection of doubloons and other coins on display, plus watch a film that describes the Fed’s central role in the country’s banking system and New York’s cash-processing facility (which is in New Jersey). Fascinating stuff, but we’re mostly distracted by the gold bricks. (Mon–Fri except bank holidays 9:30, 10:30, 11:30am; 1:30, 2:30, 3:30pm. Reservations are required and must be made at least a week in advance.)

China’s Great Wall is one of the world’s great feats of engineering and an enduring monument to the strength of an ancient civilization. China’s iconic Great Wall, actually a network of fortifications rather than a single structure, is the product of countless labors over a period of some two thousand years. Qin Shi Huang took the remnants of truly ancient fortifications, walls, and earthworks begun in the fifth century B.C. and linked them into a unified wall circa 220 B.C. as part of a massive project to protect China against marauding barbarians from the north. A fun place to come and play some mini-golf and old arcade games or hit a few balls in the batting cages. Be warned that the main attraction (the racetrack) is limited to drivers 16 and older with valid licenses, which may tend to frustrate any 14 or 15 year olds you bring...

Yeah, I've done the one at Malibu and it's fun, but it kind of smells like car exhaust a lot and you have to do a lot of waiting. HOWEVER, I looked into the one in Burlingame, and if you get a group of people to go you can RENT OUT THE TRACK for a short time at a reasonable price (on a weekday.)

M.S. replied on 2011-12-19:
The 'calories-in/out' theory, while it sounds right, just isn't the way our bodies work. It's more complex than that. It's not how much you eat but *what* you eat - certain foods are fattening. They trigger an insulin response which triggers the accumulation of fat cells. This has been known since the 60's. Read 'Why We Get Fat' by Gary Taubes for the science. Working out has absolutely nothing to do with losing weight. While there are benefits to working out, losing weight is not one of them. In fact, in most people it makes them hungrier...
M.S. replied on 2011-12-22:
Read the book and you'll see that you're interpretation of 'the physics' is off-base.
M.S. replied on 2011-12-22:
The article you cite is superficial - the guy just keeps saying Taubes is wrong but doesn't cite any evidence to back up his claims. I can say from personal experience, eating ~2500 calories per day for the past year, and still losing 60lbs and now in excellent shape, that it has nothing to do with the calories. One example: the article you cite states that cholesterol will increase on a low-carb diet - this is untrue, both from personal experience but more importantly from every research study done on it in the last decade. The author also clearly does not know what a low-carb diet consists of, as he assumes it is a high-protein diet (which no one recommends). He needs to do some research before writing such things.
M.S. replied on 2011-12-22:
Here's a simple experiment that I'd love to see done but is not gonna happen: one group eats 1200 calories of Twizzlers per day; other group eats 3500 calories with 85% coming from dietary fat and the remainder from protein. Guess who will gain weight? I guarantee it'd be the 1200 calorie crew....

If you're too out of shape to jog, run as far as you can, then start walking. When you've got your energy back, start running again. After a few weeks, you just might be able to run the whole time. If running on city streets isn't your thing, consider a park or a high school track that you can run around. Newer tracks tend to be easier on your knees and will also help you measure how far you've run.

For those less familiar, when at In-N-Out, you can pretty much get anything and everything "Animal-style", which just means extra thousand island dressing, grilled onions, and grilled in mustard. And when you say double double, it means two patties, two slices of cheese. If you're ever around an In-N-Out, go ahead and dare yourself one or two of these.
